AMD Ryzen™ Threadripper™ 5000 WX-Series vs Threadripper 3000 Series

AMD Ryzen Threadripper PRO 5000 WX-Series

AMD Ryzen Threadripper Pro 5000 WX-Series Release

Threadripper Pro, AMD’s workhorse for professional use workstation computers, has followed a sort-of regular release cycle for some time, with their Threadripper series receiving upgrades found in their mainstream platform a year later. With the Threadripper 5000 WX-Series release, most of the supporting technologies have remained the same; PCIE 4.0, 128mb of L3 cache, 2tb of standard or ECC 3200mhz memory support. The impressive part comes in when you start comparing single core IPC gains between Threadripper processor generations, and while cache has remained the same the massive uplift in single core performance has translated into multicore improvements too.

AMD Ryzen™ Threadripper™ 3975wx and 3995wx vs. 5975wx and 5995wx

Cinebench and Geekbench both highlight a massive gain in single core performance scores in the 75 and 95 processors owing purely to the IPC increase between generations with a 20% increase or more. This translates to some more modest gains in multicore performance. 7-zip, a very memory and cache bound test, highlights that not all workloads will see an increase in performance with compression even falling within the margin of error between the 3995wx and the 5995wx, but the gains are still translated into a bit of an increase in decompression efficiency.

What will the 5000 Series improvements effect?

These improvements will reduce rendering time in video editing software such as Adobe After Effects or Premiere. Compiling in Unreal Engine also see reduced times, as well as Revit model creation. Whether you want to streamline CAD design tasks, reduce simulation solve times or accelerate final frame rendering, AMD Ryzen Threadripper PRO 5000 WX-Series processor core improvements make them an excellent choice for core-heavy process demanded by a variety of editing, design, and rendering software.

Overall, the improvement between generations is quite welcome and for those working in more abstract tasks outside pure number crunching will see a notable difference thanks to the IPC improvements. In other words, creative professionals, not datacenters, are going to feel the best gains from this generation and that makes sense considering AMD intends to aim these processors directly at these industries.
