E3’s Most Awkward Moments

E3 2019

At AVADirect we are proud to announce our first-ever presence at E3, the Electronic Entertainment Expo. Our best-in-class computers are powering video game and virtual reality demonstrations at the Crytek, AMD, Virtuix Omni and Sixense booths.

With E3 ramping up, we’d like to take a look back at a few of the most embarrassing and cringe-worthy moments in E3 history. With so many announcements each year, tech companies are always trying to spice up their presentations. Sometimes, that backfires resulting in a hilarious, awkward and embarrassing situation. Here are some of our favorites.

The first that comes to mind is Mr. Caffeine from Ubisoft’s press conference at E3 in 2011. Mr. Caffeine is the alter ego of product pitchman and television personality Aaron Priceman. Some of the cringe came from his jokes about the interesting names of gaming consoles and peripherals: “Now, this has made a whole new group of pick-up lines available.  I’m sure you guys know, like, um, ‘Hey…wanna come over and play my Wii?’ or ‘We should Kinect!’ And, thanks to the Sony Move, ‘Here; hold my joy wand.’” Met with awkward silence from the audience he remarked, “Yes, I’m not afraid of a few dick jokes, thank you.” Arguably the most cringe-worthy moment came when Mr. Caffeine began describing what Ubisoft games would have looked like had they been produced 25 years ago. Each video was prefaced with his interpretation of a flashback sound effect and hand movement – ““doodly doodly doop.” Watch for yourself if you can handle it.

Not to rag on Ubisoft, but their press conference the previous year, at E3 2010, was equally awkward. To introduce Battle Tag they hired Joel McHale of Community fame. During the presentation two teams started running down the aisles playing laser tag among the audience and on stage. The crowd remained unmoved. Even worse was the fact that they people playing laser tag got bored halfway through and Joel McHale clearly did not enjoy being there.
